How a film gets in

Nothing on Bingeable is here by accident. Every film passes four gates, and a real person makes the last call.

The four gates

  1. The rating cap. Only films with a US rating of G, PG or PG-13 can be considered. Anything rated R, unrated, or marked as adult never gets near the catalog. Narnia, The Avengers and The Lord of the Rings qualify. Horror and anything harsher do not.
  2. The block-list. Whatever a film's rating, we keep out whole genres (horror) and subjects such as gore, torture and serial killers. The list is ours to edit, and every approved film is re-checked against it as it changes.
  3. A first look, not a verdict. An automated pass reads the synopsis, keywords and rating, then drafts a short note, a suggested age band and some content tags. It can't watch the film, so it only suggests. It can raise a film's age band, but it can never lower it below what the rating requires.
  4. A person decides. Each title is approved, edited or rejected by hand. If we say no, we write down why. Nothing goes live without that yes.

Age bands

Every film shows one of three bands, so you can tell at a glance:

BandStarts from US ratingWhat it means
All agesGGentle enough for the whole family.
8+PGSome peril, mild scares or emotional moments.
12+PG-13Bigger action, darker themes or stronger intensity.

A band can only go up from what the rating suggests. A G film with one genuinely tense scene can be shown as 8+. A PG film with a darker tone can be shown as 12+. Never the other way round.

Parents can set an age ceiling once, with the shield in the header. After that, nothing above it appears anywhere on Bingeable: not in lists, not in search, not in suggestions.

What's inside

A band is a summary. Content tags say what is actually in the film, so you can decide for your own family:

  • Scary moments. Some frightening scenes or creatures.
  • Peril. Characters are in danger; things turn out okay.
  • Fantasy action. Battles with swords, magic or superpowers.
  • Sad moments. A loss or emotional scene that may bring tears.
  • Mild language. A few mild words.
  • Crude humor. Toilet jokes and rude gags.

Each film also has a short note, in plain words, written for parents. You can hide films with a tag you'd rather avoid from the filters.

After a film is live

  • Every approved film is re-checked against its source data on a regular schedule. If its rating rises, or it picks up something on the block-list, it goes back to a person and disappears from public pages until it's reviewed again.
  • Every film page has a Report this film button. If a signed-in parent says a film isn't right for the age shown, we hide it straight away and look at it. Other reports need a few different people before a film is hidden, so a single stranger can't empty the catalog.
  • Reviews are checked by rules and an automated safety check before they appear, and a person looks at anything flagged. Reviews can't contain links, email addresses or phone numbers.

What we can't promise

Children are different, and so are families. We tell you what we know, and we're honest about what we can't see. You know your child. If something here is wrong, please tell us with the report button, or write to hello@bingeable.io.
